Thanksgiving is a great time to volunteer and reach out and help the homeless and the hungry. The Washington, DC area has lots of charitable organizations that need volunteers to prepare, serve and cleanup holiday meals for the poor. You can also make a donation or participate in fundraising events. If you’d like to help, here are some organizations to contact.
Food for Friends depends on thousands of volunteers to carry out their mission of delivering specialized, nutritious meals and groceries along with nutrition counseling to men, women and children facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses.
The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank is to feed those who suffer from hunger in the Washington metro area by acquiring food and distributing it through its network of partner agencies; and educating, empowering and enlightening the community about the issues of hunger and nutrition.
The mission of Bread for the City is to provide vulnerable residents of Washington, DC, with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
