As a homeowner, the need for home repairs and restorations is ultimately inevitable. At some point, you will most likely turn to someone to make changes to your property. As a landlord or investor, referring a contractor puts your word on the line. Putting your trust into a complete stranger can be a little scary at times. This is why it is vital to carefully screen and select the contractors you are hiring for the job. Here are a few guidelines to assist your decision making and put your mind at ease.

 

 

 

1. Is the contractor properly licensed?

Check license level, specialty and status:

-Does the contractor have the appropriate license level for the contract amount?

-Does the contractor have the appropriate trade licensing for the project?

2. Is the contractor properly insured?

-General Liability Insurance- Insurance policy that covers claims arising from an insured’s liability due to damage or injury (caused by negligence or acts of omission) during performance of his or her duties or business.

-Workers Compensation Insurance- Policy purchased by a firm to cover workers compensation costs. Its premium rate varies according to the nature of employees’ work and is based on the employer’s payroll. Also called workmen’s compensation insurance.

3. Is the contractor a quality company?
