Weekend Warrior: August 20-21st, 2015 Things to Do In the Washington, DC Area

“Disney in Concert”– Wolf Trap’s latest music-and-video collaboration stars characters and songs from the silver screen that you and your kids know and love. “Disney in Concert” will feature the Wolf Trap Orchestra playing songs from “Frozen,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid” and more, while movie clips from those animated films play on the big screen. Something more for the kids: There will be a parade from the Plaza to the Filene Center stage that starts 30 minutes before the show, with kids dressed as their favorite Disney characters. The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $25-­$60.

Step Afrika’s annual step showcase continues this weekend with a Step Xplosion performance at Starbust Plaza (at the corner of Benning and Bladensburg Roads in Northeast), featuring DJ Beauty and the Beatz and inviting audience participation. The celebrtion continues throughout September; check www.stepafrika.org for more dates and locations. Friday’s performance starts at 8 p.m., and it’s free.

Saturday, August 21st:

– BlackRock Center for the Arts Open House, a.k.a. “Around the World in a Day,” offers fun activities for families and kids of all ages. Prizes are being offered for the “Discover BlackRock” scavenger hunt, and there will be tours, sample classes, arts and crafts activities, a performance on the main stage and a cupcake reception. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it’s free.

“Chesapeake Crab and Beer Festival” – Another late-summer weekend, another crab feast in Unknown
Maryland. This weekend, it’s the Chesapeake Crab and Beer Festival at National Harbor, featuring everything you’d expect: crbs, cold beers, cocktails, live music and fun for the kids. A portion of the proceeds benefit Spirit of Hope Children’s Foundation. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and tickets are $70-$119.
