Weekend Warrior: August 14-16th, Things to Do in the Washington DC Area

Friday August 14th: Zac Brown Band and the Avett Brothers

On his summer tour of major league baseball stadiums, Zac Brown will set up the Nationals Park outfield with another popular country crossover group, the Avett Brothers. Brown has been mixing in the hits he’s known for, such as “Chicken Fried,” with such newer songs as the single “Homegrown” and his cover of Jason Isbell’s “Dress Blues.” The Avetts, meanwhile, mix things up from night to night, pulling from nearly 15 years of playing together. 7 p.m. at Nationals Park. $51.50-$108.50.

August 14- August 22nd: Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

Looking for family friendly entertainment this weekend? Load the kids into the minivan and make for I-270: That’s the surest way to find the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, which features a huge midway plus livestock displays, monster trucks and deep-fried curiosities. The Montgomery County Fairgrounds are open until midnight throughout the fair. $10 per person, free for ages 11 and younger, $10 for on-site parking.

Saturday, August 15th: Bikes & Brews Brewery Tour

By the seventh day of D.C. Beer Week, you’ve probably consumed a few more calories than you meant to. Get rid of them during a special Bikes & Brews brewery tour sponsored by City Bikes. A phalanx of beer-loving cyclists leaves the Adams Morgan bike shop at noon, heading for the Hellbender and Atlas breweries for tours and tastings, and then to Glen’s Garden Market for $4 draft beers. Maps and guides will be provided, but riders need to bring their own helmets and locks. Advance registration is requested. Noon to 4:30 p.m. Depart from City Bikes, 2501 Champlain St. NW. Free.

August 15- 16th: Phish

As if Phish hadn’t years ago assumed the mantle of “jam band you’re most likely to follow around the country,” frontman Trey Anastasio’s appearances at the Grateful Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” retirement shows served as a symbolic passing of the torch. And if the Dead are any kind of example, Anastasio and his collaborators of 30 years still have many miles (and many 20-minute renditions of “You Enjoy Myself”) left in the tank. Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. at Merriweather Post Pavilion. $45-$65.

Sunday, August 16th: Hanks on the Hill Beer-B-Q

Four hours of all-you-can-drink beer from Flying Dog. Four hours of all-you-can-eat fried chicken, baby back ribs, hush puppies, oysters, mac and cheese, key lime pie and peach cobbler from Hank’s. $65 per person. What more do you need to know? Sessions run noon to 4 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. at Hank’s on the Hill.

Sunday, August 16th: D.C. Beer Scavenger Hunt

The D.C. Beer Scavenger Hunt finds teams of up to four people bar-hopping around Dupont Circle, visiting Pizzeria Paradiso, the Big Hunt, the Bier Baron and other craft beer hot spots. At each stop, teams will have to solve clues to figure out which beers to order. Buying the right beer from one of 12 local breweries will lead to yet more clues, prizes such as private brewery tours, and a sense of enduring satisfaction. Registration is free and required by noon on Friday. Team costumes are encouraged. The Scavenger Hunt begins at noon, with awards handed out at an after-party at Buffalo Billiards that starts at 5 p.m.

Sunday: Sine Qua Non

If District jazz band Sine Qua Non has a reliable signature, it might be the timbre of Victor Provost’s steel-pan sparks raining down over Michael Bowie’s bass lines, which can swerve and slink and pop. There’s an airiness to the group’s approach, but it can tighten up on a groove, too. Onstage, the band is mixing its new material in with the old, and a new album is expected this autumn. Hear them play at 5 p.m. at Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital.
