3 Tips to Help you Find a Pet Friendly Rental

Finding a rental is daunting enough without trying to find one with a pet! Pet friendly rental options are more difficult to locate, as many places have pet restrictions concerning type and size of your furry friend. Moreover, a majority of landlords shy away from allowing pets altogether. We have cited 3 tips to help your pet friendly rental journey a stress free experience.

  1. Know some basic info before you start: Many rentals and apartment communities prohibit dogs weighing more than 50 pounds. Specific breeds such as Pitbulls, Rottweilers, are given a bad rap and not allowed. Landlords are slightly more lenient with cats, since they are small and not as destructive on properties. Size, however, doesn’t warrant a signed lease. Birds and rabbits have a worse reputation. The former can seriously damage the property, the latter can cause noise problems to the neighbors. In a nutshell, your new pet friendly property can be decided by your pet.
  2. Introduce your pet to your landlord: Earn your landlords confidence by arranging an introduction of your pet.  By allowing the two of you to get to know each other, you will show transparency and gain points in an eventual rental competition. Recommendation letters from past landlords and from their vet may also score you points. After your pet impresses the landlord, now it’s time for the neighbors. They can start building a trusting relationship, in which your pet can become more and more sociable with humans.
  3. Put everything in writing: This is a must do! Renting with pets involves extra planning. It may cause misunderstandings. To avoid this and keep all parties protected, your lease must list specific guidelines and rules,  and include all fees and deposits.

Finding a new place for you and your pet can be a stress free experience with a little planning ahead of time.
